Wise commentators say that current events seem like Orwell’s “1984.” But, to me, an amateur student of military history, the pattern feels more like Germany must have felt in the early 1930’s. Alan Bullock writes of how the Great Depression provided the big “opportunity” (to use Rahm Emanuel’s phrase) for Hitler: “millions… saw the apparently solid framework of their existence cracking and crumbling. In such circumstances men are no longer amenable to the arguments of reason… men entertain fantastic fears, extravagant hatreds, and extravagant hopes… the extravagant demagogy of Hitler began to attract a mass following as it had never done…” Sound familiar?

An Old Moonshiner is Driven to Suicide -- WTH?

"Popcorn" Sutton committed suicide the other day rather than report to court for sentencing to a lengthy prison term.

He was an acknowledged character who nevertheless made exemplary white-lightning corn-liquor. From all reports (I've drunk moonshine, but never Popcorn's stuff), his product had absolutely nothing in common with the water-clear, gullet-searing industrial ethanol commonly thought-of when corn-whiskey is discussed. His whiskey was a warm dark-amber and smooth as silk -- to quote someone more experienced than I: "Popcorn was an artist."

I agree that it is strange that we place such emphasis and LE resources on this silly enforcement effort, especially when the entire Muslim world is trying to kill us. But then, I'm a small-L libertarian -- so that makes me crazy.

"...the Left wants to go after the Census itself. They want to "adjust" the Census by adding "estimated" numbers of uncounted homeless, poor, and illegal immigrants. This is functionally identical to the practice of the old Democratic Party machine in Illinois, where dead Democratic voters in Chicago turned out in large enough numbers to counterbalance all the Republican votes downstate. ...Obama has set himself up to rig all future American elections, not through any democratic process, but by fiat. Just like a dictator.
